Arts and Entertainment

About Our Arts Editor, John David Ganther

As Arts and Entertainment Editor of The Legacy, I intend to cover all perspectives of the entertainment industry. We need to accustom ourselves to the entertainment industry to enrich our cultural lives. If we can participate in what we enjoy, we can enjoy life to the fullest.
Local school events are very important. More people will attend sporting and musical events if they know about them. This is crucial in creating a society as a whole. The monthly calendar will provide events for every day. I urge everyone to attend these events and send in articles and pictures.
Teenagers and adults frequently attend concerts in the Capital Region; however, everyone has different opinions. I want the public to communicate with each other by sending in reviews of concerts.
In addition to concert reviews, I hope all new movies are reviewed as well. Sometimes we aren’t sure if a movie looks good or not. And a review from the public might be more reliable than those grumpy critics.
I will also incorporate a television recap column. Here you can find an overview of any inconvenient episode you missed. If you want a show that isn’t on the list, just request it!
On a final note, I hope everyone will participate in the Arts and Entertainment section. As editor, I would love to receive articles about a local show or movie you saw. And don’t forget to check the calendar to find upcoming events to attend.

“Dare Devil"

Meghan Parmentier

Dan sweetly, and stupidly, brings Serena to an outrageously expensive restaurant in an attempt to impress her during their first real date. Serena saw through his plan and asked for a “real Dan Humphrey date.” He then brings her to a pool hall and entices her with his impressive pool skills and smooth teaching techniques. A call from Dan’s father rudely interrupted the evening to announce that Serena’s younger brother, Eric, was missing from the treatment center he has been residing in since his attempt at suicide.

While the first official date between the struggling lovebirds was taking place, Jenny Humphrey, Dan’s younger sister, got herself into a struggle of her own. Blair Waldorf was throwing her extravagant, annual slumber party for her closest friends and Jenny was invited as a sort of play toy. They played a city-wide, law-breaking version of Truth-and-Dare that was supposed to either make or break Jenny’s “acceptance” into that tight particular group of friends. Jenny had exuberated innocence in earlier episodes of the series, but she cast aside all hesitations to make a name for herself. Blair’s first dare for Jenny was to break her good (hopeful-soon to be more than) friend out of his treatment center “prison” and bring him to the bar with them for the night. Jenny succeeded and brought the thrilled Eric out into the world and night life that his mother had been shielding him from.

Serena and Eric’s mother was extremely shaken when she was notified that Eric had escaped from the center. She felt her grasp over him slipping and did not know how to ensure that he would not attempt to take his life again. She sought refuge in her ex-boyfriend, Rufus Humphrey (Jenny and Dan’s father). That night, Rufus was suffering from a broken heart and the hard-hitting realization that his marriage was over. He had called his wife concerning a painting of hers that had been sold, and the man who answered the phone at his wife’s apartment in Hudson gave the phone to Allison Humphrey, while she was getting out of the shower. Rufus and Serena’s mother used each other to get over their own pain, and throughout the night rekindled some of the fun they had known in the past. Ironically, when Allison Humphrey called to explain what the incident that occurred earlier, Serena’s mother answered the phone. The two had some unexplained, troubled history in the past. However, it certainly did not help the tension of the night.

In a strong and bold finish, Jenny Humphrey completed Blair’s final and most dangerous dare. She stole a jacket from Blair’s mother’s prestigious clothing store. Jenny managed to sweet talk the police officers away from arrest and made it back to Blair’s in time display her new found attitude and confidence in an extremely familiar, Blair-like style.

Sweaty Bandanas and Bruised Faces
by Christine Harney

Selling out at Northern Lights, the “I’m a Mathlete not an Athlete” tour was pretty intense to say the least. Accompanying Chiodos was Alesana, Enigmatic Heart (a local band from Shenendahowa), Underminded and the Devil Wears Prada. The crowd stretched from the door all the way passed the bar and bathrooms towards the stage and speakers. Even though I arrived late, just getting past the I.D. and ticket checkers, to get the infamous X’s on our hands, took about 15 minutes alone.

Once in, the Merch table gathered a crowd of anxious teens throwing money at a nervous worker impatiently demanding their shirts, hoodies and CD’s. The pit was surrounded by heavy hardcore fans complete with zipped up sweatshirts in the extreme heat and long sweat covered hair. The crowd was mostly made up of hardcore fans, girls with their arms crossed standing up against the wall to afraid to mess up their hair and make up, and older 20-somethings who remained at the bar. The alternative post-hardcore scene is more of a culture then anything else. Tight pants, bandanas, facial peircings and multi-colored hair are always part of the fashion.

On the stage, Alesena warmed the crowd up. Their heavy guitar sound got the blood rushing and the crowd shoving. The Devil Wears Prada came on shortly after an intermission of rap music and oldies. Once they came on, the pit got over-crowded. Kids were screaming lyrics along with the singer and the tension built in anticipation. The moment Chiodos stepped onto the stage with their instruments and began screaming into the mics for sound check, the audience went into an uproar. Ear drums were blown by the high pitched and grunge-like screams coming from the fans. Playing a few classics mixed in with songs from their new CD The Bone Palace Ballet, the show ended in an amazing way. After one last encore, the entire crowd, still pumped up from the experience, rushed out. Steam poured off of their bodies into the freezing cold air and they all loaded into their cars and peeled out of the parking lot.
